Ciaron Pilbeam comes from a racing family (his father Mike Pilbeam is a well-known racing car designer). He graduated from the University of Cambridge (Mathematics) and Cranfield University (Automotive Engineering). He entered F1 in 1999, starting in vehicle dynamics at British American Racing, and went on to serve as race engineer for drivers including Takuma Sato, Mark Webber, and Kimi Räikkönen, working at Red Bull, Lotus, and McLaren in turn — helping Red Bull win three constructors' championships during his time there. In 2017 he joined Renault/Alpine at Enstone as Chief Race Engineer, and in 2024 he was promoted to Alpine's Performance Technical Director.
