John Owen (born 11 May 1973, Cambridge) started out in 2001 as an Aerodynamicist at Reynard Motorsport in Brackley, moved to the Sauber team in Hinwil, Switzerland in 2002, and was promoted to Senior Aerodynamicist in 2004, remaining through Sauber's transition to BMW Sauber (2006). He returned to Brackley in 2007 to join Honda F1 as Chief Aerodynamicist, and stayed on as the team became Brawn GP (2009 double champions). When the team became the Mercedes works team in 2010 he was promoted to Chief Designer, serving as the "car architect" of Mercedes' era of seven consecutive titles;
he was promoted to Director of Vehicle Design in 2023. On 20 January 2026 the team announced he would leave later that year (on sabbatical), to be succeeded by Giacomo Tortora. Note: education is listed only on LinkedIn as Imperial College London;
neither his official biography nor Wikipedia lists a specific degree or major. F1's official website states he has been at the team "since 2007", but this refers only to his continuous tenure at the same Brackley base (Honda -> Brawn -> Mercedes) - he actually entered the industry in 2001.
Public sources indicate he is in the process of departing, so this entry is retained per his current publicly stated status.
