Paul Monaghan (born October 1967, England, nicknamed "Pedals") graduated from the University of Hertfordshire in Mechanical Engineering (bachelor's around 1989, master's in 1990). He joined McLaren in 1990, working in the design office and data engineering for about a decade;
he moved to Benetton/Renault in 2000, serving as race engineer for both Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso, and helped Alonso to his first win in 2003. After a brief transitional spell at Jordan/Midland in 2005, he joined Red Bull Racing when the team entered F1 at the end of 2005, initially as Head of Race and Test Engineering;
he moved into a factory-based role around 2009 and now serves as Chief Engineer, Car Engineering, a key technical figure behind Red Bull's rise to multiple championships. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in engineering by the University of Hertfordshire in September 2025.
