Steve Nielsen briefly trained as a police officer in 1985 before resigning, and entered the paddock by driving trucks for an F1 catering company. He joined Lotus in 1986, rose steadily through the ranks, and was promoted to Assistant Team Manager at Tyrrell in 1994. In 2001 he returned to Enstone as Sporting Director for nearly a decade, living through Benetton's transformation into Renault and Lotus, and taking part in the championship seasons of 2005 and 2006. He subsequently moved through Caterham, Toro Rosso, and Williams, served as FOM Sporting Director from 2017, briefly worked at the FIA in 2023, and in September 2025 became Managing Director of Alpine, returning to Enstone.
