Lawrence Stroll was born in Montreal and started out in his father's fashion-import business, co-founding Sportswear Holdings with Silas Chou in 1989. He subsequently took control of Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors, driving them into global brands (the latter listing on the NYSE in 2011). A longtime motorsport enthusiast, he led a consortium in 2018 that acquired the Force India team (renamed Racing Point), and in 2020 led the Yew Tree consortium's investment in Aston Martin, becoming Executive Chairman;
in 2021 he renamed the team Aston Martin F1 Team.
