Ian James graduated from Coventry University in 2001 with a degree in Automotive Engineering Design and joined McLaren Automotive as a Manufacturing Engineer. In 2005 he moved to the Daimler Group, where he held management roles in Germany and the United States and was involved in the Mercedes F1 Power Unit programme. From 2019 he served as Team Principal of the Mercedes-EQ Formula E team, winning two Teams' and two Drivers' World Championships (four titles in total). In 2022 he moved to the NEOM McLaren Formula E team as Team Principal and Managing Director. From 1 October 2025, he became Team Principal of Jaguar TCS Racing and concurrently serves as Managing Director of JLR Motorsport.
